New beginnings and the anticipation of what’s to come can cause stress to manifest upon us physically in the most unpleasant and unappealing ways. In order to put your best foot (and face) forward and suppress blemishes, we have some tips that can help lower the chances of that first day breakout. School is in session, and we have your first lesson prepared.
Unfortunately, blemishes can erupt for many reasons. The good news is, we’ve got you covered! Below are a list of questions you should ask yourself. If you are guilty of any of these factors, the chances are you may be increasing your chances for that dreaded back to school breakout.
Are your linens being washed regularly? Pardon the pun, but let’s face it, if your bed linens haven’t been changed in a good while – especially your pillow cases on a weekly minimum – you are at a huge risk for breakouts. Makeup, hair oils, dirt, saliva (don’t lie, we all drool a little), etc. – your poor pillow is being covered in these substances and rubbing back onto your face!
This probably doesn’t cross your mind, but do you regularly wash down your cell phone screen and anything else that comes in contact with your face? There’s an easy rule: if you touch your phone after you touch something germy, then chances are those germs are going to transfer to your face. So, clean your phone or use an antibacterial wipe at least twice a week. If you still use a home phone, when was the last time that handset was cleaned?
Are your hands touching your face excessively? Think about your hands and what they come into contact with. It’s just like your cellphone. If you’re going to put your fingers against your face (which we advise not to!) make sure your hands are clean!
While it’s not recommended that your hair is washed daily, if you have bangs that sit against your forehead and your hair is oily, chances are that you may be experiencing more breakouts than is normal. If you suffer from “bang-line” blemishes, we recommend that you style your hair away from your face a few times a week or use some dry shampoo to absorb the excess oil.
If you’re not washing your make-up brushes regularly, START NOW! This is huge, so pull out your notebook and write this down 20 times: I will wash my makeup brushes regularly. No excuses!
If you’re not showering after your work out, chances are you have dirt and sweat sitting on your skin, most likely breeding bacteria and clogging your pores. Try using an all-natural (alcohol free) toner immediately after your workout, as it helps remove the sebum and sweat buildup.
All-nighters are inevitable during the school year, whether you’re a student or a teacher. Believe it or not though, “beauty rest” is not just a saying. Do your best to get 7 to 8 hours a night (no less than 6 if you can’t help it!) to keep your oil levels balanced and your skin smooth and clear!
If you’re already worrying about your grades, don’t start failing by getting an F in face washing! Make sure you’re washing away the bacteria from the night before when you wake up, and then cleaning your face once again when the day is over. This will ensure that you get a straight A!
While there are many tips and tricks that can help you avoid acne, unfortunately some circumstances are out of our control. Factors like medications, your monthly hormonal cycle, your diet, and yes, your genetics too, can throw your skin out of whack as the year goes on. The most important thing you can learn from our little lesson today though, is all the ways in which you can get ahead of the curve and avoid stressing about the future.
Class dismissed!
