Sleeping with Makeup On: All Negative, No Positive

December 12, 2017 by Kathy Haney Leave a Comment

It doesn’t take a degree in dermatology to figure out that sleeping with your make up on is a terrible idea. It’s not healthy for you skin or your sheets. Some things that may pop up in your mind are, I’m tired. It’s late. What’s the harm in going to bed without washing my face this one time? Well, it’s going to harm you more than you would think in the long run. The effects of going to bed without washing your face is bad news. Here are some of the nasty stuff that happens to your lashes, your skin, and underneath the surface when you forgo removing your makeup before bed.

Clogged Pores

You’re digging a grave for your pores every time. A majority of makeup products contain ingredients like silicones that block the pores, which will leave your pores clogged. This results in bumpy skin. If you are acne prone, this can be even more harmful and lead to even more breakouts. Neglecting to remove your makeup at the end of the day is you purposely damaging your skin.

Acne

Just like our hearts work 24/7, so does our skin. Made up of protein, water, lipids, and different chemicals and minerals, our skin is continuously at work. The skin is covered in pores that help us sweat and release sebum, a natural lubricant that moisturizes skin and gets rid of dead skin cells and other harmful irritants from our pores. Makeup blocks the release of sebum when it is applied, which can cause visibly larger pores and acne after a period of time.

The pressure of your face digging into a pillow can grind your makeup into hair follicles, which also contribute to clogged pores and acne. Sacrificing a couple minutes of sleep to thoroughly clean your face with water and face wash is not that much of a hassle when you think of all the harm leaving it on will do.

Damaged Skin Cells

Skin cells are not immune to the harmful effects of sleeping with makeup on. Environmental pollutants and free radicals can easily be trapped underneath makeup which can damage skin cells, collagen included, which will lead to premature skin aging. Not only does falling asleep with a load of foundation on clog your pores, but it ultimately speeds up the aging process. Yuck.

Dull Skin

One of the most desired traits is glowing, soft, and smooth skin. No one wants dull, parched, or sallow skin. You might use a makeup product like a highlighter to help you get this peachy pink glow, which is great, but sleeping in it is not. The skin is the largest organ of the body, working continuously to secrete sweat, heal wounds, excrete lipids, and control heat regulation, so it is important that we exfoliate and cleanse it regularly.

When oil, dead skin cells, and makeup get trapped inside the pores, they suffocate the skin, which results in clogged pores and blackheads. The result of these clogged pores are acne breakouts and skin that looks dull and lifeless. This should be reason enough to take some time out of your night to clean your skin, no matter how tired you are.

Reparatory Process Is Interrupted

Sleeping is one of the most powerful tools when it comes to the regeneration and healing of our bodies, and it also holds true for our skin. While we sleep, the skin repairs itself, so removing your makeup at night is vital as it allows your pores to secrete sebum which protects and rehydrates your skin from free radicals in the environment. Leaving your makeup on interferes with these critical processes.

You Set Yourself Back

Just one night of sleeping with your makeup on can disrupt the fragile balance of your skin and set you back. Your skin regenerates when you sleep and if your pores are blocked, your skin can’t breathe which means it can’t regenerate. The oil contained within your pores builds up and transforms itself into bacteria, which can lead to many skin problems. After a single night with makeup on, your skin will require about one week to revert to its original condition and obtain balance once more. An entire week? No thank you, it’s not worth it. Remove your makeup!

You Can Speed Up the Aging Process (Get Wrinkles Faster)

This horrible habit is a source of premature aging. Sleeping with your makeup on causes breakouts from clogged pores, dries the skin out which causes redness and sensitivity, and accelerates the aging process which leads to premature wrinkles.

By not taking off your make up, you’re insuring that it’s going to cake onto your face. As magical as makeup is, if it isn’t removed properly before you go to sleep, it can lead to a collagen breakdown. If collagen cannot be made properly, it means that your skin will age faster than it should; losing moisture and drying out, creating more wrinkles and helping to deepen the ones that already exist.

Dry Skin

If you leave your makeup on, despite washing your face in the morning, it will cause flakiness, dryness, and unevenness. If you properly wash your face at night and use the correct moisturizing products that contain ingredients like witch hazel or aloe, it will help your skin replenish and repair itself at night. You will deny your skin this chance by not taking off your make up, causing it to dry out. A result of this is, every time you crease your forehead or squint in your sleep, the impression will deepen and ultimately stay there.

The loss of elasticity is the cause of dry skin which makes impurities and wrinkles more defined than ever. If you frequently continue to neglect your skin and for long periods of time, this can cause your wrinkles to appear more like scars as they deepen.

Uneven Skin Tone

In addition to lack of hygiene and the aging factor, skipping your skincare routine can make a currently uneven skin tone even worse. Makeup stops your skin from regenerating at night while you sleep and deprives the skin from creating its natural ingredients known to fight pigmentation. This means that any possibility of healing skin damage has been taken away. The same applies to dry spots/age spots too.

Irritated Eyes

Sleeping with your makeup on can result in irritated and puffy eyes. Eye makeup like kohl liner, mascara, and shadows should be removed every single night before you go to sleep, otherwise, your eyes will react by turning red and puffy. Our lashes protect our eyes from pollen, environmental pollutants, and dust, so when we fail to cleanse them thoroughly, that debris mixes in with our makeup and triggers our immune system to kick in and attack a possible infection. This results in red, swollen, tired, and irritated eyes. It’s better for your long, curled and voluminous lashes to be paired with cat-eye flick or smoky eyes, not bloodshot, puffy, and irritated skin!

Eyelashes Can Break Off

Sleeping with your eye makeup on can also result in your eyelashes breaking. The product solidifies into your lashes, causing them to turn nimble and more fragile. This is why it is very important to take it all off. Your lashes will break if you fail to properly remove your eye makeup. Gently remove it using a proper eye makeup remover; your lashes will be grateful.

You Can Develop Styes

Going to sleep with your mascara on does not only result in those luscious lashes turning brittle and breaking off, it can also create styes by clogging your lash follicles. Yikes!

Eyelid Eczema

Eczema is a skin issue that is known to affect many, but on the eyelid? Yep. When you fail to remove your eye makeup and leave on liner, shadows, and mascara, it results in causing a skin irritant, or eczema on the eyelids. Rashes, itching, scaliness, and sometimes a burning sensation on the area are some possible results. It is recommended that you contact your dermatologist and receive treatment if any of the indicated symptoms occur.

Chapped Lips

Chapped lips aren’t fun. They’re painful. When you go to apply your lipstick or lip gloss, cracked, flaky lips are not the canvas you want. Falling asleep with lipstick on sucks out moisture and causes chapping.

Dirty Sheets

There is a bigger problem that seems to go unnoticed when we focus on the outcome of our skin. The problem is spreading when you wear your makeup to bed. Not only is dry skin and wrinkles a result from left on makeup, but you’re ensuring the spread of makeup residue on your bed. This is a horrid cycle because on the nights that you do cleanse your skin, you’ll be sleeping on makeup covered, bacteria filled sheets and pillows. Compare it to walking through your city barefoot then crawling into bed. Gross! If you needed one last reason of why you shouldn’t skip your routine of cleaning your face and removing your makeup, there it is.

Don’t Skip Your Routine

Regimens and routines are essential for the health of your skin. Something you can do to properly take care of your skin and remove makeup is to wash your face twice daily. This helps to remove dead cell buildup, product, and oil that mixes in with the cells and oil. Product easily gets stuck in your pores and in between dead skin flakes. This make your pores look extremely clogged and causes your complexion to look dull. Eye makeup can cause extreme irritation and can clog several of the oil glands that surround the lash line with particle matter that comes from the product.

Do everything you can to take care of your skin. You can’t depend on your doctors or dermatologists to do all the work. At home care is just as important if not even more than any other type of care you may receive. It only takes a couple minutes to ensure the healthiness of your skin, so don’t give in to the temptation of harming your skin, no matter how tired you are.
