Juvederm

April 13, 2018 by Kathy Haney Leave a Comment

Juverderm is an FDA approved dermal filler that’s made from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that helps to hydrate and volumize the skin. Over time as we age, the hyaluronic acid deteriorates leaving us with the formation of wrinkles and folds within the skin, especially in the lower half of the face. These processes can be corrected by Juvederm which returns Hyaluronic acid to the skin.

What does it do?

Juvederm is used to “fill in” furrows, wrinkles, and depressions around the mouth and nose, the smile lines, and marionette lines. Juvederm can restore a smoother appearance to your face by temporarily adding volume underneath the skin. It can also be used to add plumpness to the lips, and decrease those vertical lip lines around your mouth, also called “smoker lines”. Even if you don’t smoke, you’ll be lucky if you don’t get them. Juvederm Voluma effectively lifts and re-volumizes sunken, flat cheeks.

What is the difference between Juvederm and Botox?

Juvederm is a dermal filler, which means it’s used to fill in wrinkles and creases in your face. Botox is different in that it relaxes the muscles in your face that pulls your skin into creases or furrows. It is mostly used on the upper part of the face where the muscles in your forehead cause lines across your forehead and between your brows. A skilled injector uses Botox to correct “gummy” smiles and turn-downed mouth and sagging necks.

Is Juvederm Safe?

Juvederm is completely safe. Since Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the body, we’re not injecting a foreign substance within you. Juvederm simply replaces the hyaluronic acid support system that is lost due to aging. Juvederm is FDA approved and has demonstrated to be a safe and effective dermal filler for patients of all skin types and colors. Since hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in everyone’s skin, there is no need to undergo an allergy skin test for there is a very small risk of an allergic reaction to it.

How soon will results show after the Juvederm treatment?

Results show immediately and naturally. Most patients require only one treatment to attain the desirable wrinkle smoothing, and the results can last up to 6 months.

Treatment preparation – Before, during, and after

Before the treatment takes place, it is best that you arrive with a clean and cleansed face with no makeup on. Refrain from taking aspirin, ibuprofen, Vitamin E and Fish Oil before the treatment, as this can increase your risk of bleeding and bruising at the injection site. Also, avoid drinking alcoholic beverages a few nights before your injection.

The treatment takes about 15 to 30 minutes, though if a topical numbing or anesthetic injection is desired, an additional 15 to 30 minutes is required for the numbing medications to take effect.

After the treatment, refrain from any vigorous exercise up until the next day. Other than that, regular activities can be resumed. Also, make sure not to touch or manipulate the site of the injection.

The patient should always return in two to four weeks for follow-up. The follow-up is important to access the patient results and determine if adjustments need to be made.

Is the treatment painful?

There may be some discomfort during and after the injection. Juvederm now includes lidocaine (a painkiller) that is mixed in with the gel to help reduce any discomfort right after it’s injected. To help further reduce discomfort, Juvederm is injected with a very fine needle. As stated above, a topical numbing cream can be applied to the area or areas that are to be injected, or an anesthetic injection can be given to help minimize any pain. This would be especially helpful for any injections around the lips as they are very sensitive. A skilled injector is trained to reduce any pain associated with this filler.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects may include redness or swelling, and slight bruising. Most side effects may be very mild and should only last a couple days. The most common side effects may appear around the injection site; they include reactions such as pain/tenderness, redness, lumps/bumps, swelling, and bruising. As with any type of injection, the risk of infection can also be a factor.
